Management System

Birse Metro has developed a web based management system.  The primary aim of the Birse Metro Management System (BMMS) is to deliver successful projects for clients working in a London Underground (LU) environment.  To achieve this, the BMMS is written to conform with the LU requirements and procedures.

Consistent Safety Performance

Throughout the past eleven years, Birse Metro has achieved a consistently high level of safety performance, carrying out 2.75 million man hours work on the London Underground network since 2002.  This achievement has been based upon a commitment by all our staff, site operatives and sub-contractors to ensure our working practices and procedures are safely carried out.  Our success has been founded upon proactive management, teamwork, forward planning and the continual review and monitoring of training requirements.

Our management system has been certified by DNV against the requirements of OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.

Assurance

Assurance is the cornerstone of being able to successfully deliver fully compliant projects to LU.  Late in 2006 the Birse Metro Assurance Regime was audited by LU, and in early 2007 the Birse Metro was notified that we are an “assured supplier” to LU.

The company places great emphasis on fulfilling these requirements and has a dedicated Assurance Manager to providing support to the project teams and ensuring assurance requirements are identified, implemented and programmed through all the stages of design and construction.

Our assurance regime has been developed not only to meet LU requirements, but also to enhance our quality management system that is certified to ISO 9001:  2000.  This certification was transferred to DNV in February 2008.

In 2006 external safety auditors from Metronet Rail audited the Company's management system and operations.  This audit has resulted in Birse Metro being designated a low risk supplier.

Environmental Management

A significant achievement for Birse Metro in 2005 was the transition of our ISO 14001 certification to the new ISO14001:  2004 for our Environmental Management System.  This certification was transferred to DNV in February 2008.

An ongoing Environmental Action Plan has assisted us in focusing on continual improvement for a relatively new concept of Environmental Management.

Current objectives are:

  • Minimising the impact of on-site operations on the environment and our neighbours.
  • Increasing awareness and training for staff.
  • Increasing designer's awareness for incorporation at the design stage.
  • Optimising the utilisation of resources.

Integrated Management System

We believe good environmental practice and sustainability is key to our future which goes hand in hand with health, safety and quality.  The combining of our environment and health and safety and quality systems provides a robust and focused integrated Health, Safety and Environmental Management System to improve our management of projects in future years.

Together with the achievement of ISO 9001:  2000 and OHSAS 18001:  1999 certification, this has enabled us to integrate Health, Safety, Quality and Environment into one Management System.  Our HSQE management system is now audited as a single integrated management system by DNV.
